A Letter From Pastor Takeda

Dear friends,

"Welcome home!"

When we hear the words, we experience a sense of comfort and rest. We are back where we belong.  It is good to be home...

When I board one of the Japanese airlines bound for my native country of Japan, the attendants slightly bow to me and say, "Welcome home" (instead of "Welcome aboard" as they say to visitors).  They make me feel at home.  It is a journey back to where I am from.  Whether it is your family, country, or church, it is always good to be home.

On our own journeys, many of us have "come home" – come home to God.  He says to us all, "Welcome home!" And He still waits for more to make their way back to Him. Until we are all home with Him, join us at Blaine Christian Fellowship as we journey together.

Welcome home...

Meet the Elders of Blaine Christian Fellowship

While we believe that the biblical model is that the responsibility of leadership rests on men, we affirm that a husband without his wife is incomplete in ministry life as well as in his personal and public life.  A husband and wife team cannot be separated.  They together become a wonderful instrument of God's grace.  Good examples of this may be seen in Adam and Eve (see Genesis 2:18-25) and in Aquila and Priscilla (see Acts 18).  At BCF, therefore, we appoint men to be elders, and see their wives to be an integral part of their ministry.

Ryoichi Takeda, Pastor

Pastor Ryoichi, a native of Japan, became a Christian when he was a junior in high school.  His ministry experiences include pastoring in Japan, two church plants in Toronto, and ministering in White Rock, BC, Canada. He came to Blaine Christian Fellowship in 1997.  Pastor Ryoichi has a passion for teaching and foreign missions. His educational background is commerce (B.Com., Japan) and in theology (M.Div., Regent College - Vancouver, BC.).  He and his wife Lydia met in Japan while she was doing missionary work. They have been married since 1981 and have two children - Christopher-Paul (Chrispy) and JoAnna. They are a truly cross-cultural family - Japanese-Dutch-Canadian ministering in the USA.

Luke Button

Luke was born in Vancouver, Washington, and raised in Santa Rosa, California. He has been married to his wife, Jule` for 40 years and they have five sons, four daughter-in-laws, three grandson, and four granddaughters.

Luke came to know Christ as a senior in high school at christian family camp in 1967. His prior church experiences were sunday school at the Presbyterian church.

Luke loves studying and teaching the scripture, and enjoys gardening as well.

Dan DeMent

Dan was raised in Blaine and lives in Custer.  He and his wife Nancy have been married for 38 years, and have two children: Gail and Cory.

Dan met Jesus in the scriptures at the age of 28 after exploring enlightened "religions" with some friends at work.  After being challenged to read the parable of the mustard seed, he was moved to read the 4 Gospels.  There he met Jesus, believed Him & received Him, and his life was forever changed.

Some of the things that attracted the DeMents to BCF over 20 years ago were the focus and freedom of worship, teaching of the word, and a community focused on love, acceptance and forgiveness.  These days, Dan has a passion to help the new generation of church leaders & servants be successful in advancing the kingdom.

Dave Anderson

Dave and his wife, Debra, were born again in 1970, married in 1973, and moved to Blaine in 1975.  They have three adult children, Whitney, Kelsey, and Skyler.  They also have a 12 year old granddaughter, Hailey Anderson.

Dave received his call to the ministry of Christian counseling in 1971.  He completed his BS in Psychology from Washington State University in 1974, and his MS in Psychology from Western Washington University in 1977.  Dave has worked at several Christian counseling agencies in Washington State and British Columbia, Canada.  He is currently a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with Discovery Counseling Associates in Bellingham.  Most of Dave's clients are Christians who are working out their "...salvation with fear and trembling" (Philippians 2:12), as they address their individual or marital issues.  Debra received her BA in education from Washington State University in 1975.  She currently teaches Early Childhood Special Education at Blaine Primary School.

Dave and Debra have been active at BCF since its inception.  Dave loves studying and teaching the Scriptures and Debra is gifted in practical administration and has facilitated various aspects of church life including women's ministry and special events.

Rod Smith

Rod was born in Portland, Oregon and raised in Spokane, WA.  Here he met and shortly after graduation in 1964, married his high school sweetheart, Katherine.  They have 4 children who are all married, one son-in-law, three daughter-in-laws and ten grandchildren.

In 1967, Rod and Kathy came to know Christ during what has come to be known as the charismatic outpouring of the Holy Spirit.  They first encountered Christ as Savior/Deliever at a Nazerene Church in Ballard and a short time later were introduced to the Holy Spirit as the thrid person of the Trinity in the home of friends.  Their journey lead them to Ephrata, WA  where they helped open a Christian coffee house called "The Rock."  During the time of the "Jesus People" movement, their home in Ephrata was constantly open to high school students seeking to know God.  This lasted about four years.  From Ephrata their journey led them to White Rock, B.C.  Here Rod attened ministry training classes offered by the White Rock Evangelistic Tabernacle--later reorganized as White Rock Christian Fellowship--now known as Life Church of White Rock.  After moving their family to Blaine, Rod and Kathy began their ministry as leaders of a home group in White Rock.

As the number of attending church from Blaine increased, a desire grew to have a similar fellowship located in Blaine.  Several couples from White Rock Christian Fellowship who lived in Blaine began meeting on Wednesday nights for home fellowship.  Soon this expanded to include meeting on Sunday evenings, and included people from the community who did not attend church in White Rock.  The incorporation of Blaine Christian Fellowship as a church planting of White Rock Christian Fellowship was a natural outcome of these meetings.

Rod and Kathy currently work in Blaine and are passionate about family, their personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and Blaine Christian Fellowship.  They love to nuture people and to see them grow in faith.

Jared Haechton

Jared is married to Stacy and joined our church after moving up here to pursue education at ACTS seminary in Langley, B.C., which he just completed this fall. The Haechtons plan on someday leaving for the mission field, but are appreciated as a blessing to us at this time.  The Haechtons have three sons, Wesley, Micah and Enoch.

Meet the Youth Pastor

Justin Long, Youth Pastor

Justin was raised in the bustling metropolis of Archie, Missouri.  He got his first experience working with youth as a camp counselor at Black Forest Camp and Conference Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado and as a youth worker at the First Baptist Church of Archie, the church he grew up in.  He moved to Blaine in order to attend Trinity Western University, where he received a degree in Biblical studies and linguistics. He is married to Ann, who is a blessing to Justin, as she helps him organize youth events and bible studies.

They both desire to see youth move from a place of having a knowledge of God to passionate pursuit of Him.
